History: http://hunterxhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Kurapika#Background

AU History: The Kurtas were a small, isolated village cut off from the rest of the world since the Cataclysm, and chose to focus on self-improvement, seeking enlightenment from within. Every member of the village has a genetic mutation that causes their eyes to turn red when feeling extreme emotions, and they view it as a thing of beauty, and a way to show one’s progress on enlightenment – the less someone’s eyes turned scarlet, the better control they have. The Kurtas decided that the outside world was too dangerous, and forbid anyone from leaving unless they proved themselves capable of being self-sufficient.

A year before the current events, Kurapika was one of the few who sought to see the outside world, due to an incident where his best friend was severely maimed rescuing him, hoping to find a medicine that would cure him. It took months of arguing before he was even allowed to attempt the tests: First to pass a complicated quiz on their version of the war of the gods, the second was a physical trial of endurance (that his best friend secretly helped him to cheat), and the third was to find a pokemon willing to do a favor for the village to make up for the loss of a useful pair of hands. While on his way out to fulfill the last task, he noticed a group of armed travelers with pokemon coming towards his village, and having a bad feeling about it, he secretly followed them and hid – spying on the meeting between them and the village elder.

The group gave the Kurtas a choice: Join them, or die. The elder flatly refused citing that the Kurtas chose to be reclusive for a reason, and the armed men immediately attacked and slaughtered the villagers – someone’s Ariados noticed Kurapika’s red eyes and attacked him. The next thing he knew, he woke up with his body wrapped in chains, and a highly concerned pumpkaboo sitting on his chest. After burying whoever he could, he left to hunt down the band, but soon realized he had no chance to defeat them, reluctantly drawing away to hone his newly awakened abilities before returning to the hunt.

What he doesn’t know is that he didn’t survive the massacre, he died along with everyone else, but his emotional turmoil was so intense that he came back as a corporeal spirit.

He followed the trail of the murderers, stopping only to continuing training in his abilities, because of some injustice he could not help but correct or the trail had gone cold and he had to wait for news. His wandering eventually led him to Union, where he hoped he can pick clues as to the current whereabouts of his village’s killers.

Canon Personality: Kurapika is reticent and comes off as cool and calculating when spoken to and observed. While other characters rush into a situation, he for the most part stay silent and hang back to gather information before he acts. He will always ask questions if he’s unsure about a situation, preferring to admit his ignorance rather than act on bad intel. Sometimes though, given his studious nature, he is often surprised when what to him was obvious had escaped the notice of others, not realizing that not everyone has the same attention to detail or analytical abilities that he possesses.

While he’s quite happy to explain what he has learned, or what might be useful, he tries to avoid talking about himself – because he views it as a potential weakness for enemies to exploit, and he prefers to keep others at an arm’s length until he’s certain he can trust them. He generally considers himself shy and socially anxious, becoming uncomfortable when the spot light is on him or is made to socialize for extended periods of time, and takes on leadership roles with great reluctance and only if bribed or there is no one else capable of filling the job.

Kurapika tries to be moralistic, and comes off as judgmental because of it. He detests lies and liars, choosing often to remain silent or not offering information. The young man often shows open disdain towards more mercenary characters, looking down on those who said they’re only after money or bloodshed, and picked a fight with Leorio over this until he discovered the man’s true motivation (not that he apologized for the insults). Even with revenge he has some limits, he sets a very specific condition on his power that if he were to ever use it on someone who isn’t a member of the Phantom Troupe, he will instantly die, and he made sure his fights with them are taken far away where no innocent bystanders will get caught in the crossfire.

Revenge is his driving motivation, it’s what leads him to his actions from traveling to training, to even temporarily teaming up with a known killer in order get close to the targets of his revenge. To him, it’s the only thing he has to live for, and he fears losing this motivation more than he fears dying. And despite himself, he is utterly incapable of staying calm when it comes to his targets, letting his rage take control – becoming so single-mindedly focused that he walks willingly into traps, and even botches his own meticulous plans because he ends up jumping the gun. If left alone without anything else to work on, he will dwell heavily on both his duty, and the massacre, and become withdrawn. He has no idea what he plans on doing once he killed all the Phantom Troupe and recovered all the remaining Scarlet eyes.

For the few who had gotten close to him, he is extremely supportive of them, actually abandoning a chance to kill the spiders in order to free Gon and Killua when his bloodlust ended up getting them captured. He doesn’t stop his friends from performing life-endangering acts, because while he is concerned about their safety, he understands that his friends take these risks because it’s important to them and he should help them, not stop them - unless he's quite certain they're doing something suicidal. Even then, he will relent if they can convince him that they have a solid, well put-together plan, appealing to the tactician in him. Kurapika however will claim he has no friends, more to convince himself to not stray from his intended path.

While generally well-mannered and he shows deference to superiors even if he questions their capability, Kurapika has a sharp tongue, quite willing to lecture people for poor judgement, or respond sarcastically to people he does not care for. As noted above, he sometimes holds people up to too high a standard assuming everyone has the same ability he does, though he generally backs off and apologizes if someone points out that he’s being unfair. If someone he likes has a moral failing, he is especially harsh on them, feeling disappointment in this fact, and hoped that by being brutally honest that he could help them from repeating their mistakes. He’s far more gentle when correcting someone that’s visibly upset, remorseful or he knows is more frail emotionally, as he never intends to be mean, he just wants people to live up to his expectations.

AU Deviation: Because of the Kurta’s deeper isolation than canon, while Kurapika is still very book smart, he is largely ignorant of social cues that’s normal for Union, preferring to default to being overly polite and becoming extremely embarrassed at overt displays of friendship or affection.

And the events are far more recent, making him part more prone to snap and lash out at perceived injustice, but also conversely, he hasn’t had the time to let the grief to fester and convince him to shut himself out from the possibility of letting people get past his defensive barrier so to speak, allowing him to be more open about accepting “Allies”.

He has an aversion to all Bug-types, preferring to avoid being in their presence and becomes highly stressed when he can’t do so, and will respond with almost a berserker rage at the sight of an Ariados or Spinarak. Part of his aversion is due to his ghost-typing, and part of it is how he died – too much exposure to the spidery pokemon would make him confront his death, which he isn’t ready for.

Canon Abilities: Hoo boy, this is going to get complicated, folks!

In Hunter x Hunter world, Nen is basically a combo Chi/Magic form that manifest in various ways, in Kurapika's case - he's known as a Conjurer, allowing him create objects out of thin air - in his case, his chosen medium is chains, and to conceal the specific nature of his ability, he wears a bracelet and five ring piece all connected together by chains, with each digit forming a different type of chain technique.

Normally conjured items are no stronger than ordinary objects of the same type, their only advantaged is being called and returned at will. However, all Nen Techniques can be strengthen by placing limitations on themselves, the more restrictive the conditions are the stronger it is. Kurapika set a specific limitation: He can only use "Chain Jail" on members of the Phantom Troupe, and if he were to ever use that technique on someone who isn't a spider, he will instantly die.

Kurapika is unique in the world of Hunter x Hunter is that he is of two Nen-types, a Conjurer normally, but when his eyes turn Scarlet, he becomes that's known as a Specialist - a user whose ability doesn't fall under normal categories.

Heavy use of Nen, especially if his eyes turned red takes a heavy toll on him, Near the end of the yorknew arc, he was laid completely unconscious for nearly three days with an almost deadly high fever.

Gyo: a general Nen ability anyone can use: It's a concentration of aura on a specific body part to strengthen it, Kurapika generally uses it on his eyes to see Auras and objects hidden by In.

In: The use of aura to conceal objects from sight, he generally uses it to conceal his chains from sight to launch surprise attacks.

Shu: Another general Nen ability, it extends the aura to objects that the user touches, allowing them to manipulate it like an extension of their own body. In this case, this allows Kurapika to move his chains in ways that's impossible to do by just swinging it around.

Dowsing Chain: By creating a ball and chain, he can use it offensively like a meteor hammer, or more often he uses it in an investigative manner to detect if someone's lying or to look for missing people.

Holy Chain: When shaped like a cross, this chain can heal injuries, only minor ones normally, but when his eyes are red, they can heal major injuries such as broken bones.

Chain Jail: This is a chain that extends from his middle finger ring, it will wrap around enemies and forcibly shut down their innate special abilities. In order to make it virtually unbreakable, he put a limitation that if he uses it on anyone other than a Spider, he will instantly die.

Judgment Chain: An ability he can only use when his eyes are red - by inserting the hooked chain into a person's chest and wrap around their heart, he can force two conditions they must follow while the chain's inside them but if they violate it, the chain will crush the heart - killing them instantly. Kurapika had used this on himself to strengthen the power of Chain Jail

Emperor Time: An ability he activates when his eyes turn red, it essentially allows him to use all categories of Nen ability to maximum efficiency for a Conjurer - it won't increase his base abilities, but it means the effects of those techniques are greater (see Holy Chain)

Enlightened Abilities: Kurapika is a Steel/Ghost Analyst – using a combination of his natural observational skills, and his near-obsessive intel gathering to quickly assess and gain information. He has some decent hand-to-hand combat skills.

His eyes will turn red when he has very strong emotions – usually fear or rage, this does not give him any kind of benefits, though it makes quite difficult for him to hide how he really feels.

By default, he carries a set of chains that due to his typing he can manipulate like they’re an extension of his own body, though he is still learning how best to manipulate them to the best usage possible. And uniquely, he can take anything with a metal chain such as a pendant, and turn it into a dowsing rod of sorts, either holding it over a map to find people, or to detect liars by watching how the chain moves as the person he questions answers. The dowsing chain isn’t perfect; abilities that can conceal a user can negate his tracking and lie-detecting powers, and with the latter – a particularly skilled liar can word their answer to be truthful but not revealing.

By his second evolution, he will start to utilize his ghost-typing more as he would likely realize he’s dead at that point, rendering himself as not invisible, but someone ‘not worth paying attention to’ to anyone except those who have some form of aura reading or telepathy. Kurapika will have full mastery in using his chains, which now truly become part of his body, allowing him to summon and make them disappear at will, as well as change their length as he needs it, or apply hooks, spikes and claws at the ends to better grip objects. This is because the chains are actually formed from ectoplasm that he wills into the shape and hardness of steel. He will also gain the ability to move them in a dizzying pattern that can cause confusion in onlookers if they don’t tear their eyes away or interrupt him.

On his final evolution takes on a more Steel approach, increasing the number of chains he can conjure up and control from two to six, and if half of them manage to wrap around an enemy, they can inflict the move Disable, preventing them from using one of their special abilities for a period of time, if he gets all six around the enemy, he instead inflicts Paraylze. Kurapika can also choose to heal an ally or himself by gently wrapping a chain around the affected area and let this chain dissolve, taking the wound with it; if he uses a chain like this – it’s gone and cannot be conjured for a week as he’s sacrificing a part of his ectoplasm to mend the wound and need time to regenerate it. He cannot heal old scars, can only make a life-threatening injury less lethal, and will not attempt to heal broken bones unless someone properly sets them first. Physically, his hair and natural gray eyes will take on a metallic cast, and tattoo-like chain patterns start to appear, starting from his fingertips, then up to his arms where they meet over his heart.

Starter Pokémon: Pumpkaboo named Pairo

Notes/Special Considerations: Kurapika’s clan was slaughtered by Ever Grande fanatics after the elder refused to join them, so he will if circumstances allow try to go after them for revenge and place it as number one priority.

SAMPLES
First-Person:
[He takes a deep, steady breath to calm himself down before he presses the on button of the band. It's amazing how useful this would be, but the idea of speaking to so many strangers at once was nerve-wracking. Calm down, focus - be professional, and everything will work out, he tells himself. Better practice the introduce first, just to be safe]

Good Afternoon. I am Kurapika - a traveler from abroad.

[No, too evasive, people will get suspicious he thought]

I'm from a village up North and to the West, a small one. We generally keep to ourselves, so you wouldn't have heard of it.

[Okay, that's a little better, reword it and should be good enough - damn, what usually goes after these introductions? He glances up at the floating Pumpkaboo waving it's arms as if he's holding imaginary pom-poms - eliciting a smile out of the blond before he realized it. He pulls the pokemon down to hug lightly]

Thanks... Wish I was better at making small talk, Pairo, then I wouldn't have to worry so much about what I can and can't say every time we find civilization. Too bad you can't talk for me, friend.

Third-Person:
• What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life? They’re allies. Where I am from, we gave them a respectful distance, occasionally feeding one that visit the village in return for a favor… we don’t have the natural closeness that Unionites have.

• What do you feel your role in your city is? I am simply a visitor – Helping the people here helps me in turn… I cannot overlook the suffering I’ve seen.

• To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness? I will of course look for them until all avenues of investigation is exhausted, and tell them that next time they need to bring a compass if they plan on going out in the wilds.

• What would you say the most important occupation is within your city? The recordkeepers are considered the most important members of the village, for they understood best the reason we survived the cataclysm, and how best to control our weaker impulses and flaws to live in harmony with our land.

• What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man? Sincerity, Intelligence, and Kindness. I do not like liars, and I cannot tolerate idiots and people who act irrationally. Kindness – we need more of that in this world.

• The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity? I would tell someone else to take my place; I am not a good representative for anyone. You don’t want some as socially anxious as I am in such an important position.

• What would you say is your greatest duty, and why? My greatest duty is to punish the wicked, so my people can rest in peace. There is no one else that can do this.

• When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why? Research – you cannot make the best decision unless you know as much as possible.

• In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable? Murderers, Torturers, Thieves; Those who have power and then use it to harm others for selfish reasons. They are the people who need to be chained to the distorted world.

• No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why? I am content with my abilities; to be able to understand and analyze my surroundings quickly has been beneficial for me and others who chose to travel with me.

What's Kurapika's Deal? - WIP

Motivation: Revenge. There's a group of murderers and thieves known as the Phantom Troupe aka 'Spiders' due to their distinctive tattoos. Five years before start of canon, they murdered Kurapika's entire clan for their distinctive eyes, so he made it his life's goal to stop every Spider in existence and to recover the stolen eyes to properly bury them.

The Kurta Clan's eyes are normally brown, but turn a beautiful scarlet color when they're emotionally agitated - this shade of red is considered one of the seven most beautiful colors in the world, but can cause fear and dread in a normal person that witnesses this transformation.

Special interaction notes: Because of his history with the Phantom Troupe, Kurapika is severely arachnophobic and reacts violently to the presence of spiders - almost killing a man with a spider tattoo despite knowing he wasn't a member of the Troupe, and he said even ordinary spiders cause him to behave the same way.
